Thanks for the great blog! I’m trying to figure out how to handle notes on my desktop and my pda. I love onenote on the desktop, but there are some major limitations on the pda/windows mobile side. The biggest of these is that there is that I see no way to search notes in the Onenote Mobile. This makes it impractical to have a large number of notes on the pda and means it cannot serve as the primary note database there. The fact that only one notes section can be synchronized, and that tags are not available, also means there is no way to organize notes on the pda beyond sorting by date or name. I hope the new version of Onenote makes the mobile version are more serious tool.

you should find a program called double hyperlink in your list of programs. You have to run it from outside OneNote. Due to various installaion problems I did not integrate it into OneNote.

I am aware of the problems with treeview, but due to lack of time I have been unable to work on it. I might fix it later if I have enough time.

The installation *appears* to go well, but once I open ON, there is no indication that the addin was installed, not does it appear in the list of addins. How is one to use it?

The TreeView contol is fine, but
1. it does take a longish time to load, so I ended up not using it, after my initial interest
2. the background on my installation is a darkish Teal, and the lettering black - a not very readable combination. better to stick to b/w in my opinion.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the feedback. The background/foreground issue is annoying but I can’t seem to be able to do much about that. I tried a couple of things but it just doesn’t work. I think it works well for the first time? but if you close and relaunch it goes on the background. The workaround I have is killing dllhost.exe (it also hosts other addins so I don’t know how suitable it is) and then launching. This causes it to come on top. Let me know if that helps.

I installed on Vista. seems allright so far, but doesn’t come to top when being called. Also needs several clicks on Button but still rests in background. this is annoying as mostly OneNote is used in full screen mode, so TreeView must be fetched into foreground.
the idea is great. Are you going on developing?

One very unfortunate limitation of what we could with embedded files in this version is that our search will not produce hits within the embedded files. I won’t go into all the technical details and issues dealing with indexing engines etc., but I will say this pains us greatly, it’s somethign we really wanted to do, we thought long and hard about it, but we just couldn’t do that work in this release. It’s a lot of work to do right and we focused most of our search energy on just getting fast indexed search for OneNote content right.

So the text in the embedded file is not searchable (as opposed to printing) …

printing to onenote for very large pdfs ( > 100 pages ) doesn’t seem to work very well; and there is the formatting/ page number issue as well;

Although I do end up printing to OneNote just so that I can have it all in one place, it is far from ideal , specially for larger pdfs …

use onenote,embed the pdf file, print to single pages using the onenote plugin “printout manager’. This keeps all of your info in one place. You can search the embedded pdf file in onenote as well.

What do you mean that you can’t search embedded pdf files in endnote? It seems to work on mine.

Good job. I hope this will get into the next version of OneNote.
I would like it into OneNote.

As someone else said, collapsing pages is also a future must… we have so much information…
